I do get your point, but there are ways of expressing your opinion where it doesn't come across as highly offensive. What he said was very crude. He coud of just said "I don't think she's a great performer" or, "I really didn't enjoy her performance at all." Instead, Carey took it way too far, especially when the performance was actually praised by most people. As SOTDH said, it makes him appear to be someone who is fetching to heal his own insecurities.
