Fantasy (remix) is a POP/HIP-HOP song BECAUSE of its incorporation of a rap artist.
|
No, because Fantasy had a hip hop beat, sampled hook, as well as a rap intro and a hip hop bridge, with pop/R&B vocals.
It totally different from all the other rap features in the past.

My point is that we're both going all in to defend out faves.

And it's been 20 years and All I Want For Xmas Is You is starting to make its way back to the charts. It's the bigger song than IWALY, and will be continued to be played every Xmas for the next 50-60 years.
|
Whitney's Star Spangled Banner at the Superbowl was more iconic than anything Mariah has done.

You're not defending Mariah. You're just saying silly remarks in an attempt to bash the other artist.
Ressti is defending Mariah.
Once you said Whitney was local that showed that you're just saying anything hoping to finally make a point.

Sorry, I don't change history, but I can see you are with your own comments.
And LOL @ you thinking the only barrier was MTV. I see there's no point even carrying on here with you.

Mariah. Without her, there wouldn't be the term "featuring" attached to all of your fave's songs. She sold over 200 million records worldwide, eclipsing the probably inflated 170 million record sales of Whitney by 30 million. She is the main inspiration for this generation's vocal legends like Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. She has 18 ****ing #1's in the US and I can tell y'all it's not over yet. She's a Legend in Japan, selling more albums there than some local household names and is the best-selling foreign artist in that country. Her songs get covered in casting shows WEEKLY, get played by reality TV programs around the world DAILY. All I Want For Christmas Is You is the most impactful christmas song by a female artist EVER. She has broken so many records and revolutionized the music business in such a big way, I can't even describe it nor think of any reason why somebody would think differently.

I don't know. I really love Whitney Houston, but Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey, she stills relevant nowadays, and people tend to remember more than one song from her, besides I don't care about what everyone says, Mariah's whistles > any other vocalist.
Maybe I'm being biased, but Mariah Carey!

That's why I mentioned New Jack Swing and Janet before. New Jack Swing was of course extremely popular and made rap features feel more natural, but it hasn't been used since the mid 90's... Fantasy came after and it was different. This is when Pop/R&B artists started making Pop and R&B songs that incorporated Hip Hop beats and had actual Hip Hop bridges and featured rappers more heavily.

Before she was dead, Whitney Houston was constantly recognized for many of the things that people have mentioned in this thread: the changing of the way people sang through her own vocal style, her revitalizing the power ballad, breaking down barriers for black, R&B, pop and female artists etc.
So stop with that excuse.

Girl, focus on the debate, if you can. My point is: Mariah isn't behind to be losing like that.

Doesn't change the fact that the only reason Whit's winning this poll is because of her recent death and especially young people buying her music again. Go and invest some time in wikipedia to educate yourself. Mariah had more impact, won more awards, sold more records, has a much bigger vocal range, more influence on today's artists plus she's still a driving force in music business, while Whitney struggled with her solo projects since after her third album.

And you're wrong. In the 80s, the Force MD's, an R&B group, used hip-hop beats in their music and rapping in their music. Brandy's 1994 remix of I Wanna Be Down w/ MC Lyte and Queen Latifah used a hip-hop beat. I could list many other examples.
Mariah was not the first to start it. She was revolutionary because of her IMAGE: a pop diva incorporating hip-hop. THAT'S what was startling, that's what was new. And that's what influenced Beyonce, Christina, Britney, Katy Perry etc. have incorporated hip-hop artists in their work.

Whitney is the most awarded female artist in history. Check Guinness. Recent? Her death was almost a year ago. Obviously any sentiments related to her death are fading now.
Y'all act like Whitney wasn't praised and regarded as a major influence before her death. The media bashed her just like they did any other artist, but they never tried to diminish what she did for music and artists after her.
I'm not investing time in Wikipedia. The "it's because she's dead" comment is stale. There are several threads like this before her death in which she won also. Come up with another excuse before 2013 please.

I know very well what barriers there were and I'm pretty sure MJ was the first black artist to get heavy play on rock radios, to get included in all pop categories at award shows and to be called an actual pop artist, not just R&B. As well as making sure that Whitney's videos could get played on MTV.

I'll focus on what I see fit to focus on.
Hilarious how you're telling me to focus on the debate, yet you posted your point because of what you saw happening in the debate's results. How redundant.

So do you think something's true because it's winning a poll on a pop music web board? Seriously, the facts speak for itself.

Your right. Actually, Chaka Khan did it too, while we're at it. That wasn't my point at all. My point was, MC's song, the Fantasy Remix, influenced everyone else. Not Brandy, The Force MD's, not Chaka Khan, but Mariah Carey.
Her influence is undeniable really. We're still seeing it happen. What business does Katy Perry have featuring Kanye West? Pop/Hip Hop collaborations were rare before Fantasy, but after... not so much.

My point wasn't that at all. Obviously I was referring to the "She's only winning because she's dead" claims by saying that no, she won polls like this BEFORE her death. I didn't say that the polls were an indication of what's true or not.
Goodness. Reading is fundamental
