She does seem very different. However, when I look back at her Breakaway performances, they look unnatural like she's trying so hard to be the rocker chick. And let's not forget about her "ghetto" phase where she started speaking as if she were from inner city LA instead of Texas. Those couple of years all seemed kind of off to me, especially when I compare how natural she seems now when performing and speaking. I've always speculated that part of the reason why she had that breakdown (in addition to being worked too hard / spotlight, etc.) was because she was trying so hard to be someone else, for whatever reason.
I see more similarities in performance style and personality when looking at the Idol days, Thankful days, MD, AIEW, and now. Breakaway was such an oddball era. I'm not sure what it means, though, that that era was the most successful.
Which scene?
I mean, yeah, she has grown up and is wiser and more experienced now, but just compare her 2005 and 2009 Rove interviews, personality-wise, she's pretty much the same. During 2007 she seemed a little off (for obvious reasons), but other than that she hasn't changed much in this area.
One of my friends from California uses it all the time.
