It's not trolling. It's marketing.
Right now tumblr and twitter are a buzz about these things. All an artist has to do to be seen as a successful celebrity in an "elite group" is flash the commonly talked about symbolism. People buy into it. They take part in it and talk about it and it spreads like wildfire all across blogs and social media.
