The amount of suffering though. I mean, can gays say they were shipped from their homeland and suffered through centuries as victims of outright slavery? Even on the topic of segregation, no one today forces me to go to a "gay" bathroom or "gay" restaurant just because of my sexual orientation. Thing is gays are hopefully closer to attaining marriage rights if Obama wins again.

I didn't claim the severity of treatment was equal, I claimed that the circumstances are comparable; the LGBT community remains the one without equal rights in comparison to the rest of the people, while being the most widely discussed (for that reason) in today's society. Similarly, the African American community was denied rights in a very public way back before segregation was ended, though of course they were far worse off. However, socially the LGBT community is still in a very similar place even if they aren't governmentally; you still have people being murdered for being anything other than straight and you do have establishments that refuse to serve them, as well as being disallowed from marriage ceremonies by several churches. You have kids committing suicide due to the bullying. If you observe from a social perspective many parallels can be drawn.
And this is only in the US. Take a look at other countries where racism is much less of an issue, but gays are still put to death.
