Can I just take a few minutes to talk about this?
This song is about to go triple platinum, and what's more, it looks like it's poised to enter the year-end top 10 in terms of digital sales. Unless OMN makes it in there too, fun. will be the only act this year to get two different singles in the YTD top 10 on the digital charts. That's pretty cool in itself, and I
could just say, "ZOMG NEW KINGS OF POP, WHEN WILL YOUR FAVES", but there's something else I want to talk about.
When We Are Young was still dominating the charts, a lot of people (including, admittedly, myself) thought that their success was just a fluke and that they'd go down in history as one- hit wonders. I knew that Some Nights was sort of hovering below the Top 50 at the time, but I didn't imagine that it'd be anything more than a minor success, even after it got an official release and a video.
And then... slowly but surely, it started building an audience. It just kept getting more and more popular despite limited promo and mediocre radio updates. It took over a month for it to finally reach the top 10 on iTunes, but it hasn't left since, even after the onslaught of new, high- profile releases from the likes of Taylor Swift, One Direction, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Ke$ha.
I love the fact that this has gotten as big as it has, is what I'm trying to say here. It didn't have massively frontloaded sales, it wasn't constantly shoved down our throats... it just naturally got to where it was because it's an awesome friggin' song.
My hat's off to you, fun.
