Similes are meant to be used sparingly because they compare something to an entirely unrelated and irrelevant thing, which then temporarily distracts the audience. Taylor throws so many similes at listeners in "Red" that it completely distracts them from the fact that nothing is being said.

When you listen to Enchanted, you're left thinking about meeting someone incredible. When you listen to We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, you know that the relationship is completely done. When you listen to Red, you wonder what the song was even about because all you remember is "maserati" "crossword puzzle" "blue" "dark gray" and "red."

What does "loving him was red" mean? There's no context for any of the similes or metaphors in the song, so the song falls flat on its face and it ultimately doesn't say much of anything. One of the worst written songs of Taylor's career, aside from it's brilliant bridge (which is fortunately enough to redeem some of the song's shortcomings).

It's a 6/10.

I think it should go IKYWT next on Pop with no dual release because one of the songs will suffer. Lessons need to be learned from Mean/SOU and she can't send it to country. If State of Grace is the song of the year that Scott was talking about and he was not being delusional then if it is country pop then it should be sent to country radio next when Begin Again is done in time for the ACMs. If it smashes send it to pop and use the momentum when it is done for Red to be sent next and have Treacherous be the final single. Next year should not be messy and only have country or country pop singles released for the nominations at ACMs, CMAs etc. She needs to be thinking about those things if the album is to have any longevity.

I agree which is why I think it should be the second or third single sent to country radio depending on the genre and reaction to State of Grace. If SOG is a better song than Red then they would be wise to release it early next year and get momentum for the album, award season and other singles.

True. The only part I ever really cringe at is the rhyming of t-shirt and bleachers tbh. It's not representative of her abilities in any way and it's not going to age with her, but it's still well written for what it is.

edited to add: It tells a story and has some direction and a lot of cute little Taylor esque rhyming tricks in it. I went from loving it to wanting it off my radio to appreciating it in comparison to some of the material she's releasing this era.
