If I remember correctly, Matt and Jeremy were trying to sneak Elena out of town which is why she left in the first place. She would've never been in the truck if it wasn't for their plan. I think that's part of it. The other part being pure resentment that Matt got to stay alive and Elena didn't.

I'm so glad they didn't find a way to save Elena. I'm sick of people dying to protect her, I have a feeling Bonnie will find a way to undo it tho
They are mad at Matt because he survived and Elena died. Elena told Stefan to save Matt instead of her , so he listened. In the process, she died. So Damon wants Matt's head on the fireplace mantel and Stefan wants him to wake up every morning grateful as hell to be alive and breathing for Elena's wish.

That too, but then Elena told him to turn the truck around. And nobody can stand Elena mad or say no to her.
