Look, at the end of the day, both Ne-Yo and Lady Gaga have had many big hits. They both have massive hits as recently as 2011. Will Lady Gaga ever become an icon? Nobody knows. Maybe, maybe not. Will Ne-Yo ever become an icon? Nobody knows. Maybe, maybe not. They're both very successful singers.
Though it was a fabrication people claiming 'Give Me Everything' as Ne-Yo's accomplishment are off, the song was written mostly by someone who's fought a lot to be where he is and that would be Pitbull. Who's started 2 years before Ne-Yo. Ne-Yo wasn't even planned to be the singer in the song, they wanted Shakira but she declined the offer. He's the co-writer and he doesn't have the headlining credits of Afrojack and Pitbull.
Worlwide, 'Give Me Everything' has sold the same as 'Born This Way'. 'Born This Way' the album has sold released a year later than 'Teenage Dream' wich had 6 #1 hits and 2 Top3s in the Hot 100 more than 8 milion copies, the same as a apparently a more successful album.
We would need to see how good is Artpop to say if she'll be an icon, but I can see her surpassing Britney Spears easily as an icon. And BTW was a great album with a lackluster promotion.
