Per the documentary that aired earlier this week in the UK, Nicki sort of hides the fact she's always been comfortable financially because it would make it difficult to connect with hip-hop fans. Drake did the same thing too. That's also how Nicki was able to do her mixtapes, and shop around freely between labels with them - she self-funded them.

Sis, NOBODY believes Drake went through ANY type of struggle.
But I do know that there is NO cost to attend Laguardia High School. It's a public school, but obviously you have to audition and maintain a certain average.
Nicki had a DIFFICULT childhood, especially in Trini, but once she got into her teens and above, things got better and she was able to make good money with good jobs,

It's a regular public high school which has a great Creative Arts program. Anyone can go there if they're in the area.
