Selling 1 million is a huge feat in the UK. There single certification system makes it a huge feat to go 2x platinum but hardly anybody does more than that. I'd say the German market is closer to the UK than you think it is.

lol i know its a great song, but my point is, it didnt chart at the Hot 100 when it was first released, it only peaked at 18 at the Billboard alternative songs charts, thats why im surprised, lol
