Its a very deep seated issue in music...

There are some artists who are categorized as R&B purely because of skin colour.. When the reality of the matter is they have been making pop music for years..

The sad and unfortunate truth is its alot easier for a lightskinned girl to make it then a dark skinned because the music industry is really image driven... its the same with weight too and its a shame because some truly talented artists are slept on for YEARS.

But I can't at everyone blaming "the industry" - it's not that simple. Specifically speaking on black artists (as I am not Asian or Latino) they are inhibited by their own a LOT of the time. When a black artist tries to do something remotely different from R&B/rap and appeal to a bigger audience/different demographics, they get hated on by their own race. Usher, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Nicki, Kelly Rowland, etc (even Beyonce, who to this day gets accused of skin bleaching and abandoning her "black side" and all types of dumb crap)... all tried pop and crossing over to the masses and were welcomed with open arms but the black community cried "sell out" or "acting white" or all this BS. It's annoying.

Until we as a whole are open to other sounds and music and not just wanting some hardcore rapper or depressed R&B songstress to represent us, things won't change as well. It requires work and acceptance by EVERYONE, not just "the industry".

True. Black folk can be an issue, but we don't buy music like we used to (so for me it's not so much of an issue in that way). Urban isn't even selling. If you can get pop on side, you're set (just keep strong and DONT **** up black people...it always drags us down - MJ/Whit).

We all know that if Usher sang Too Close, that urban radio would play it. It's more urban than OMG is, and that was a big urban hit.

In the UK, Alex Clare was actually nominated for a MOBO (Muisic of Black Origin) award, so at least people in the UK recognize what style of music he does.

Adele works because of her music, she's AC so her image isn't an issue, she's recently crossed over and smashed.

I think it works both ways though... I mean there is a reason why Eminem gets ZERO Urban radio support even though he is the biggest rapper in the world.

It can do. But then it makes sense why urban would't play him though. He smashes with pop and other formats, why should they bother?

Yeah, exactly. Love the Way You Lie got good urban support, but that's because of Rihanna probably.

I wish urban radio in the US based on the SONG rather than the ARTIST. Urban music would be more popular then aswell. R&B/hip hop music needs all the help it can get at the moment. If a white singer is doing a song with R&B or hip hop characteristics, then urban radio should support it as much as possible. The bigger the song is, the more it will open the doors for black artists to have hits with that style of music.

It's not like this in the UK. On the urban stations in the UK, they play tons of white artists, you can hear Plan B, Devlin, Dappy, Tulisa, Nero, Chase & Status, DJ Fresh, Ed Sheeran, Professor Green, and plenty of others. I don't get what it is with the urban stations in the US. Why are they so racist?

Eminem smashes on pop, but urban support Rihanna even though she smashes on pop. Eminem's music would appeal to the people that listen to the urban radio.

It's sad. Even groups like D12 and the Black Eyed Peas have been ignored by urban because there's just one white member in the group.

I agree and disagree. The difference is Em doesn't need black radio support for his music to be successful. Most black rappers only have urban stations as their avenue. Only few cross over into pop radio and you aren't really considered successful unless you cross over.
So no it doesn't go both ways

It does. In the during 2002-2006, lots of black rappers crossed over to pop, and urban radio still supported them.

i little bit, yes. but individual success doesn't say anything about society today. stuff like that takes time to completely fade away.

and, you're using modern day examples, try going back to the 80s when, oh, Michael Jackson got like 5 singles to go #1 and Santana was a successful guitarist. what's going on today doesn't determine social issues on whole unless you're being specific. you're thread topic is a very broad topic because you're talking about it overall.

During that time period R&B was the main sound of music being played just like that euro pop stuff is now. Even then still only few acts crossed over.

White artist who release that kind of music are played on urban stations. Robin Thicke is played on urban stations constantly. So where are you coming from??
