Almost all male artists have nothing special about them and are safe and generic.

The only MODERN male pop artists that aren't generic are Bruno Mars and Adam Lambert, but they are kinda flopping right now.

For the record, Making Mirrors is more diverse and interesting than any record I've heard from a pop girl in recent memory.

Male pop stars are afraid to play with sexuality. They know they'll gain fame by appealing to the female crowd, but most (except Lambert) seem to ever veer away or build off from that audience. I can't imagine many male pop stars attempting to dabble in the avant-garde form. There is no boundary pushing because they believe they must remain the object of female attention or else they have no career.

I just don't get this. Male pop-stars don't need to play with their sexuality to break out of the generic mold. It lies in the music, and not in their sexual individuality.

I agree, this is only a problem in the mainstream pop scene though, but it's true...they're all modelled after mid noughties Usher and Justin Timberlake who are in turned modelled after MJ (but taking out the elements that made him unique and were probably considered "riskier" to today's audiences).

If you look at male artists in mainstream pop....Justin Bieber, Jason DeRulo, Jay Sean, Taio Cruz....they're all completely interchangeable. You can add The Wanted to that list as well, completely "generic young hot guys who like to have fun singing about love". Adam Levine and Bruno Mars have a bit more individuality but still nothing compared to the 80s when you had people like George Michael, Prince, Michael Jackson.....the crop of male artists in pop now is so poor comparatively.

And when you have someone like Gotye he's not considered pop.

Adam is not on the same level as Prince/MJ/Bowie And I'm not talking success-wise, just the music....Adam's music is basic and generic, full of Z-grade Dr. Luke productions with generic lyrics...those three on the other hand are true artists who did revolutionary things and were one of a kind. Adam has a great voice but he's not an artist that's NEARLY on the same level. He's not the mainstream pop artist we need.

Maybe it was controversial in America but Adam is a non-factor outside of the US border (and within it considering his album sales and singles performance), "worldwide controversy"? His music is generic and basic....."Whataya Want From Me" could be any P!nk/Kelly Clarkson pop rock song, "If I Had You" is a generic Max Martin club banger that could have gone to Usher, "For Your Entertainment" is a bit more unique but it still has Dr. Luke's generic, tired studio flourishes.....his two singles off Tresspassing are basic, generic and could have gone to any male pop star. He's not a great artist, which is why he's flopping now. I would love to see a gay male artist experience huge success but only if the music is good.
