The fact of the matter is, all Rihanna really did was make videos that were dark in terms of colouring and lighting. Gaga had themes, imagery, connotations etc.
What you described in a pathetic attempt at shading Rihanna also characterizes Alejandro, Born This Way, Edge of Glory and to an extent, Judas and Marry The Night.
Neither looks good... Rihanna looks horrible with her hair that short.. the whole rated r era was ugly imo... I like red hair bright colour rihanna so much more.. Gaga, well I never find her attractive so it's hard to compliment her but if I had to pick between the 2, gaga had a better visual dark era and her music from the fame moster was amazing so I will go with her

Did you happen to get Joseph Kahn's version of TEOG? Cuz I assure you, the public and I watched a version that was incredibly bland and uninspired.
Her videos were definitely dark. Russian Roulette alone.

And even though she used guns and tanks in her imagery, she seemed so fragile to me then and because of what she went through it was a little more believable that she would go this direction. "Dark" means more than wearing weird make up and strange outfits.
