The fact of the matter is, all Rihanna really did was make videos that were dark in terms of colouring and lighting. Gaga had themes, imagery, connotations etc.

we also need to remember that the Rated R era and look was planned and worked on for months with an actual visual artist, and it shows. Especially the RR look and video are incredibly haunting.

mmmh, no. Russia Roulette uses suicide theme as a methaphor for love, hard has the military/war theme.

Gaga's Alejandro was a dark video, but telephone was not dark, and bad romance was all white and sparkling (dark theme but not imagery)

Rihanna was only really 'dark' for the RR artwork. I wouldn't describe anything after the first single as exceptionally 'dark'. She looked hot as hell, but in hindsight considering how short lived it was...it kind of undercuts the authenticity of it IMO.

Gaga is more intrinsically 'dark', to me. She rocked the gothic look with TFM, she rocked the metal-glam look with BTW and even with seemingly lighthearted moments like Telephone and Paparazzi...she still managed to twist it into dark kitsch. It's not always about black and white visuals.

But the way it was portrayed was light, fluffy, funny and with a lot of colors.
I really do not consider that as dark.
There was a lot of controversial when the Russian Roulette video was released, they thought is was about suicide.
