1. Basically shipments are what the label sends to stores. It's not classed as sold until it gets scanned at the counter.
2. The RIAA, the people who certify all albums, work by shipments.
3. So if 1,000,000 copies get sent to stores, it's certified platinum, even if they haven't been purchased, by customers, yet.
