Was it a challenge growing up in the spotlight?
“I think it’s unfair when your 15, 16 or 17 to be critical of a child. It was kind of like a giant high school for me growing up because every single person had an opinion and sometimes it wasn’t nice. I did care a lot about that because when you are a teen, you care so much about what other people think. It was hard at first for me to get used to it. Now that I’m older and experienced life a little more, I really could care less now. I love what I do. I have the best fans and the best time doing what I do.”
What advice do you have for teens dealing with overprotective parents such as Adam Sandler’s character in Hotel Transylvania?
“You’ve got to meet in the middle. It’s hard. Whenever you’re experiencing that whole ‘I want to go and be on my own feeling’ you tend to want to say ‘whatever’ and brush it off.’ But I find if you talk it out with them and find middle ground, it’s so much smoother. Me and my mom talked it out and she’d ask me to text her at a certain point and let her know when I got home. It’s all about communicating. My character Mavis is more about angst and then she stops and listens to her dad. She trusts him and then he ends up betraying her. It’s a lesson for parents, kids and teens.”
Why did you want to do this film?
“Adam had mentioned my name and you don’t say no to Adam Sandler. The movie was amazing. I loved the script and thought it was really cute. It was such a great cast. It was kind of a no brainer.”
Were there any backstage antics with a cast that includes Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade and CeeLo Green?
“Andy and Adam got to do a little together. Mostly every one else recorded their parts separately but I got to hear a little of what they had done and there would be times in the scene when I would just start laughing. I’d have no idea what was going on and just hear all these people in my head. Adam was really funny.”
What was your favorite halloween costume over the years?
“I was a really cool witch one year that funny enough, kind of looked like Mavis. She had this long dress and I got to wear makeup for the first time and I felt very cool.”
Do you have a favorite scene in this movie?
“I love when everybody’s together and when the Fran Drescher character comes in and says ‘The humans are scary.’ I think it’s cool how the movie twists it. The monsters are the good ones. I love the line where Andy says to Adam ‘Are you gonna suck my blood?’ and Adam responds ‘Oh, it’s so fattening!” It humanizes the traditional Dracula character.”
What do you appreciate about the message of this film?
“Mavis believes in how Dracula and her mom met and that was the ‘zing’ as we call it in the movie--the moment you see that person, you instantly know. I don’t think I’ve ever really experienced that but I think it’s so sweet when you see their characters at first and they both felt it. That was their zing. It’s really cute. And who wouldn’t fall in love with Andy Samberg?”
Who is your favorite horror movie character?
“I love scary movies! I was terrified of Freddy but I watched it all the time. I love Chucky, Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I was obsessed with all of the main ones growing up. I’ve also been to Halloween Horror Nights in L.A.”
Which fall fashion item can’t you live without?
“I love knee high socks with boots. I did a photo shoot recently and I got to wear really adorable socks with boots. I love layering. That’s the best part of fall with scarves and cardigans. You can dress way cuter in the fall.”
