She dyed her hair pink on August 2, 2011 or probably earlier than that date and she tied MJ on August 17, 2011 then she made her first public/TV appearance since tying MJ's record on August 28, 2011 at the VMA's still having that pink hair.

I think they kind of had to include that MJ part. It's one of those 'elephants in the room' that you can't ignore. So I think it was kind of a last minute, "we got to show this somehow".
