This is not entirely true. Alot of polorizing figures were voices of their generation, Kurt Cobain, Elvis for instance. Its not about being liked by the general public, because in Katys case, the music is too lightweight to be considered thought provoking. Paula Abdul, Boys 2 Men, and MC Hammer were all liked by the general public, but the likes of Bono and Kurt Cobain were the ones to write the thought provoking music during that era. Katy and Rihanna do not write or perform thought provoking music, and most rock fans dont even respect them as musicians, so they cant even be called such.
Kurt Cobain was a ****ing junkie and he spoke out to alot of teens of generation x. Katy perry has no voice cause she is just PC.

Thank you for putting it into perspective. This idea that one must be universally liked in order to be the voice of a generation is contradicted by the fact that many generational voices were artists who pushed against the grain and wasn't afraid to speak out and do the exact opposite of what everyone expected.
The only reason people are bringing up this "Katy is more liked" argument is because it's all they have and nothing else to prove she's the voice of anything. Apparently scoring more #1 singles means Katy's more liked even though Gaga has more FB likes, Twitter followers, Youtube views, record sales, and awards.
