Aretha sang from a "I'm gonna tell you 'bout my life" stance.
Whitney sang from a "look how beautiful this song is/can be" perspective.
That girl sings from a "my voice is amazing, look at what it can do" viewpoint. I will never be here for it.

OMG CHIMIER you make it so clear. I never thought of it that way.
asdjnajdan Why won't y'all call Christina by her name
I don't think that's necessarily true. Sometimes a vocalist can know their way around a song better than the actual songwriter could imagine. Aretha Franklin didn't write "Respect" and "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman," but she interpreted, emoted, and really sculpted the song better than the songwriter could (even though Otis's version is great also).
I don't mean that the writer automatically understands a song better. I just think that writing music probably helps a singer to appreciate and interpret their work in a new way, to look at it beyond the purely vocal level.

Beyonce sings from a "I am really not aware of how hard I am ****ting on my peers" perspective.
I hate when Xtina does her super-high head notes. It seems like she wants people to THINK that she's doing a whistle note like Mariah when she's not. She knows what she is doing She only does it to get a reaction out of the audience because they will think she's doing a "Mariah note."

Christina's greatest downfall will always be her tendency to show off stuff she doesn't have. She grossly overestimates her ability and then crashes and burns, whereas Beyonce knows what she can and can't do. That's why she never sounds a mess. She doesn't try to do **** she can't do because she's under the impression that she can.
I love how this thread turned to the sole subject of the queen of vocals. <3 The general public knows that Xtina's better than Whitney, Celine, and Mariah, so just deal with it, since that's all that matters.

If the general public comprises of you and Christina then I agree
Whitney's voice never sounded Black. That's why she was so big.
Why the Black audience turned away from her.
It didn't sound "Black" until the 90s.
That's what I mean. I don't mean that as a racist comment or anything but the reality is that the reason her voice was so well liked was because it didn't have that "black" sound, she could be any race really so people everywhere took a liking to her. I don't know if I'm getting across the point I'm trying to make though.
