So this has always been an issue, but it's been on my mind a lot since Gabby Douglas has been in the spotlight, last night in particular, and the main thing on a lot of black people's minds is her hair. Like I don't get it; Gabrielle Douglas is a talented, young woman who's overcame a lot to become the 4th American Female Gymnast to win the Olympic All-Around competition and the first African American woman and the only thing the black community can do is talk about how "horrible" her hair is. It really pissed me off, to be honest. This young woman has represented our country and the black community in a major way, on one of the most prestigious stages, and we find a way to throw **** at her because of her outer appearance? Now don't get me wrong, I love my weaves and I get my hair permed, but there's more to a woman than her hair.
And I know it's not just black people who are judging her because of her hair. I do remember clearly Rihanna being called ghetto on here because she decided she wanted to rock dreads for a short stint and the majority of the people saying it weren't even black and know nothing about African American hair and the culture behind it. So I don't want to generalize, but last night I couldn't help but notice that the majority of the ones slamming Gabby were indeed black. Like what's the ****ing issue? I don't get why it's so hard to give respect and appreciation for this successful young woman (and others) for breaking boundaries and representing the African American's in a positive light. Why does it seem like we always find a way to ruin something so good? Why do we always have to "hate" on each other?
Let's discuss.
