They never knew. Aaliyah snuck off with kelly to go to chicago to get married and VIBE magazine quickly posted the certificate. Thats when the parents found out, and aaliyahs father had it anulled and sent her off overseas to tour. Barry was very well aware though. I can honestly say that.

There are countless interviews with them together and any person with eyes could see they had some sort of a relationship that went well beyond music. Aaliyah and Kelly worked together for more than a year, that's a lil too long for someone to sneak off and their parents not know who their with especially when they both were appearing on TV with each other at the time. Aaliyah's parents werent heavily involved in her music career like Tina and Matthew were for example. Barry started off being Aaliyah's manager, and once that marriage drama came out Aaliyah's father stepped in and was Aaliyah's manager for the second half of the AANBAN era and the beginning of OIAM era. However, he got real sick and he had to step down and give the management back to Barry.

And you can't really tell sh!t. All I see in the interviews is a mentor and his protegee. You may see it as a relationship, but you can't speak for what everyone else saw. Some people even thought they were RELATED before the whole drama came out.
