It's fun in-game, but it's cheap as FUDGENUGGETS, competitively.
Just spam Protect and Substitute until you get the boosts you want, and then attack. It relies completely on luck and ruins the strategy of the game.

My smeargle doesn't even have Protect or Substitute.
I just use Dark Void to put hoes to sleep , Spider Web, Leech Seed, then get out of there
