True, and Kim also retired in 2007 leaving yet another gulf. Serena was great in her prime, but she has continued to win slams way past her peak. Her serve is better than ever, but her game in general is quite ragged. I don't think there's as much depth to the game nowadays as people are suggesting, it's just that some of the other top players are too inconsistent. It's a case of them losing rather than their opponents winning. 2012 has been the best year for the WTA in a long time IMO. There's finally a sign that things are starting to change and that late 80's/ early 90's generation are truly beginning to take over.
I think the tour need to revise their rules for the younger players though. It's proving to be more and more difficult for teenagers to catch a break. Virtually all the great champions were top ten and in some cases GS champions during the teens. There's currently only two in the top 100.
