Katy also opened on a THURSDAY and not a FRIDAY. Let's not even get into foreign receipts.

Jonas Brothers
Australia: $105,369
UK: $189,445
New Zealand: $10,611

All MUCH less than Katy's weekend totals.
Katy has already saved herself from JB/Glee level-performance even with a modest start, not to mention the rest of the run, other foreign numbers, and DVD sales.

And her four day total was lower than their three day take. You are not good with this box office thing.
But POM should make more than their movie thanks to the strength of summer weekdays and less rush factor.

The Thursday opening did take away from her 3-day gross. The difference would likely have been smaller than $5M if she'd opened on Friday.
But Katy's movie played on 2,700 screens compared to the JoBros' 1,200 screens.

Who had more competition?
Who is going to have stronger legs almost certainly?
Who is doing FAR better internationally already?
Who is the one calling the movie a flop after the opening weekend in the US?

Which is my point. Her weekend numbers would have been stronger had she not opened the day after July 4th.

And on a larger scale, the movie industry keeps booming while movie theater chains continue to struggle, which doesn't really add up when movies make hundreds of millions of dollars on a regular basis and producers/actors/writers cost far more than ushers and box office clerks.
|
Movie theater chains are not struggling plus theaters+studios make deals when they got big sure fire blockbusters (say, Dark Knight Rises) in which, in week 1, the studio can keep up to 90% of the revenue, in week 2, 80%, etc.

It already opened in all the English-speaking markets and did $2.3m combined. Sound the alarm!
Outgrossing the Jonas Brothers concert movie won't be any more of an achievement than coming in "not last" in the Special Olympics.

Also, let's keep a general consensus this is not a Jonas Brothers/Hannah Montanna/Justin Bieber teen-crazed phenomena.

I never said the numbers were overly impressive, so let's not put words into people's mouths.
And yes, sound the alarm! It looks amazing compared to a 300k opening in total of the UK, AUS, and NZ for the Jonas Brothers.

And it might not seem like it affects much now, but you'll see in time for her next era (unless she brings something spectacular) that her endorsers will drop. This could even affect small things like the designers that send her clothing to wear for events, which has already been at risk because she frequents worst dressed lists because of poor styling. I studied and work in PR so I know how little things like a flop can affect companies' views on an artist.
But I think the movie itself was a bad idea because they should have just ended the era on a positive note and used the hype from this era to sell the next album and film.
|
That's awesome that you work in PR. I really have to supplement my knowledge of the field. My understanding of PR is so vague. I majored in Communication Studies (recent grad on the job hunt).
I'm not that invested in Katy Perry, so I didn't really care that she put out the film. I just like her a bit because she's also from California.

This. Specially the Hannah Montanna movie. It was backed by a very successful tv show for kids. A movie about Hannah Montanna, the character, is really different from a movie about Miley Cyrus, the pop star.

BTW, the MONSTROUS per theatre average for Miley's movie
Katy - 2,730 screens, $2,619 per screen.
JoBros - 1,276 screens, $9,843 per screen.
Bieber - 3,105 screens, $9,505 per screen.
Miley - 683 screens, $45,561 per screen.

I don't know what she is thinking. Yes, Katy is very very successful now but if you were not a hardcore fans, you probably wouldn't want to watch her movie. I don't think she has a lot of hardcore fans like those teen acts (Miley, Jonas Brother, Justin Bieber...)

at least there's a note for the industry
