I think it was a combination of things for Whitney. Aretha was practically a chain smoker and her voiced held up alright (well sort of). Plus of course they don't need to lip, since they don't do any movement during their shows.

There's always an exception to every rule.
Most of the time, when albums are released in the first quarter, it struggles hard because that's the slowest selling climate. 2nd quarter is a mild selling climate, 3rd and 4th are the big bang months for singles and albums.
