Not true. Who do you think buys most of music???? It's not black people nor has it ever been.
Janet is one of the few black acts that were able to TRULY cross over though.
Globally R&B don't sell as well but in the US it's sells( no where near what it used to) and has sold VERY WELL.

(I'm not talking about awards, sales or charts) what has she done in the industry that has changed how things are done??? NOTHING. Being flava of the week and having a few cute songs DON'T make her an icon. Hell many people feel that Janet's icon title is up for debate( and she herself doesn't feel that she is one) so I know damn well Britney isn't one

Even the most ardent Janet fans wouldn't try and dismiss Britney's iconic status. And why are you talking about their age? BOTH of them stalled commercially after their 5th album (I'm giving Janet the handicap here since her first two albums were absolute flops) but at least Britney bounced back earning more money than every other bitch in the game and getting top 10 hits, you better think if that = her career through, where does that leave Janet?

I CAN'T @ this argument of Britney still getting hits. Ummm, last time I checked, Janet was still getting hits 13 years after her first album was released as well. She got her second biggest radio hit 19 years after her debut, and was still bringing it millions. No one knows how much Janet was earning because Janet has never been one to publicize her income.

No you guys really are delusional. NOONE outside of ATRL would put Britney and icon in the same sentence. Just because Britney sold some records and had a few hits, she is NOT an icon.
You guys use the word too loosely. 98% of the stuff you guys say is iconic IS NOT.
N their ages DO MATTER. Janet is 46 and Britney is 30. At 30 Janet was getting ready to release the Velvet Rope. When Britney is 46 I highly doubt people will even remember she made music. Janet was in her performing prime. Britney can barley walk across the stage. Need I go further???

Right, no female prior to Janet was selling R&B globally and moving units like she was. She "globalized" a genre that was exclusive to the US. Now look there's a UK R&B chart, and Japanese R&B artists.

No one knows how much ANY of them earn. So I don't know why that's brought up anyway. Forbes includes PROJECTED future earnings. The artist has to make that stuff available to them. Even if they got those amounts you still have to deduct taxes and all other expenses.

I know right. Britney might have been big in the 90's. But now she is treated as a complete joke. Janet might not be massive right now and she probably won't be again. But people still respect her legacy and impact. And I agree about the whole stupid iconic thing, i honestly think that word should be banned. BRITNEY IS NOT ICONIC

I love Janet with all my heart... BUT R&B had crossed over by the time she came. She is just one of the few acts who music crossed over successfully

I know Janet is a bigger icon than Britney. But to say Britney isn't an icon just proves that u are ignorant and know nothing about her.

I know, but if you look at the big R&B females prior to Janet - Aretha, Natalie, Patti, Teena, etc - none of them were moving units like Janet. Not one. Granted they broke the door down for Janet to do what she did, but they weren't vastly popular overseas like Janet was.

Right, you're calling other people delusional yet you're the one pretending to be in touch with the 7 billion people living on earth.
Your argument of what defines iconic is SENSELESS and faulty. What did Janet do that hasn't been done before? It's about having a memorable career; memorable performances, memorable songs, memorable videos, memorable MOMENTS, that's what defines being an icon.
when she's 46? being after 30 years in her career? that's still more time it took people to forget about Janet ^_^.

No I'm not ignorant but she ISN'T ICONIC. Iconic is not having a few hits, being popular or making a few catchy songs. What has she done in the industry that hasnt been done before her??? What barriers had she broken down??? What avenues has she reached that haven't been reached before her???? What did she change about the industry when she came along???
I'm waiting on my answers.......
Every time I ask these questions, no one can answer.

All of Britneys hits are disposable. They might be praised as hell on this board, but none of them have aged as well as Janet's Classic "Together Again"...Least not where I'm from anyways. And Janet's had plenty of memorable videos and moments so what exactly are you on about?

Janet is more pop than any of them were. Janet(minus Tina) also crossed over post Thriller. Before Thriller no R&B acts crossed over like that. Not even MJ himself.
While Janet music us more R&B compared to say Whitney's earlier music, she still isn't in that category. Anita Baker, Toni Braxton, Vanessa Williams, Stephanie Mills, SWV, En Vogue are r&b acts more along the line of the ladies you mentioned
