There's a Gotye's interview out in an Italian Magazine called Style (he's on the cover) and you get clearly he is not interested in having multiple hits: he's happy that success of STIUTK - a total multiple Grammy winner candidate this year for me - will allow him to be still free in its creativity and will of experimenting, but if that success in terms of sales and chart positions won't ever be replied he won't blink an eye.
I expect him to enjoy still a moderate to good success with his next single, but if he ends up being like the amazing folkish kings Mumford and Sons and sell his album for a year and a half, without ever cross the top ten of singles again, I will be happier than if he gets another top 5 hit, and then have people pushing him to go mainstream (and he wouldn't anyway).
I think he's amused by the way every format has embraced his song... but somehow he still think that's also a bit dumb, to like something just because everybody else does (he said something in that vein in the interview too).
