The thing that made the Pixies the best band of the 80s was their loud-quiet-loud dynamic. All four band members greatly contributed to it, but Frank Black - as the lead and head songwriter - was at the head of the pack. His ability to go from demented to lovelorn, violent to ecstatic, lost to erotic, was and is unrivaled.
