There's absolutely no reason whatsoever to think they exist.
Human intelligence comes from years and year and years of evolution and development. The idea of a mermaid contradict the physiological norms and structure of almost every living species on Earth, not to mention that the chances that another, aquatic form of life on Earth with identical mental capabilities as us exists is infinitely small. I'm not saying we're anywhere close to having discovered every type of species there is, but the baseless assumption of the existence of a creature that we know about only from myth and fiction is completely illogical.
I could make up a story about a society of flying lizards that live up in the clouds and them claim they exist, since we haven't yet explored every square foot of the sky. We can't completely rule out the idea that they're real since it's impossible to prove something doesn't exist, but there would be no basis to believe in them.
It's different than belief in God, and religion in general, because the entire foundation of religion is faith. Willingly accepting an unknown power as a way to define a lifestyle ≠ deciding that a magical creature exists without any concrete proof.
