But being proper serious now, I can't think of many examples of proper religious songs getting to #1, but there's a few with slight religious themes in them. For example Born This Way (Capital H-I-M, God makes no mistakes, etc.). And also Viva La Vida has some religious themes in its lyrics.
They'll probably add "Lights" to the US version of the new album if they plan to release something soon.
They've already released "Lights" (album) in the US though. Would be ridiculous to add the song to a new album. If this really does become a big sleeper hit (which manages to hit #1) her label will either choose to re-release some of her other singles to capitalise from the success of the song, and get those album sales up OR, like you said, add it to the new album and just carry on like planned (but delay the new album for a while).
