what do you mean REHASHED? R&B is a specific sound and it doesn't require some groundbreaking innovative styles to be considered good.
R&B is about the lyrics, mood, style and sound. Unfortunately some of you don't know what its like to hear about grown relationships or real LOVE so you just want something that you can shake your butt too.

to a mediocre talent like Jhené Aiko, let alone an insufferably artist like The Weeknd.

He makes the same type of music as them. He has a terrible one-note voice. His "R&B" music consists of him singing about being dumped by a female and how he wants her back with some slow melancholic beat/melody. Sounds like The Weeknd's music to me.

R&B is leaning towards darker and more atmospheric territory, and many lesser known artists, the ones who inspire a few of the artists you've listed, experiment on a much deeper level, incorporating many different genres into R&B. R&B doesn't have to be straightforward and hi-hat/clap. R&B, like Pop, has many faces and facets.
No, R&B is not absolute trash. Pharell's "Happy" is more of Funk R&B no? I wouldn't rule it out of it being a Pop song either. Maybe you just don't know where to look? R&B is everywhere.
