This is a complaint I want to voice as well - the majority of the time I know all the material already because I'm one of those who pays attention during class, and I just have to sit there and regurgitate it so my teacher can get their eligibility grades in.

I know for a fact, some teachers LOVE to put things in homework way more difficult than the stuff you're learning or studying to truly test your limits.

The "way more difficult stuff" is maybe for ambitious students? You don't have to master them to pass the test.
Stop with the excuse. You seem to be a real slacker.

I like doing some homework but don't assign me too much of it. Papers also take me a while to finish.

And I see people in this thread are twisting others' arguments to make it seem like they're suggesting that no homework be given out when no one has seriously said such a thing. There's a healthy middle ground between the two extremes.

And this!
There's a middle ground. Not some of you acting like we said "No homework should ever exist".
It may be implied using the Finland example but it's just not true.
Reduced homework would be better than spending from 6pm to 12am (and later) doing homework nightly.
The amount of times I had to skip dinner to finish homework at a somewhat reasonable time in high school was ridiculous.
Teens aren't even mentally developed enough for that level of mental work daily.
That's the only point I'm trying to make.

!
And sometimes, the work.would have nothing to do with what I learned in class that day. I get it done, but when I'm finished, I'm like, what was the point of this? I feel like if it doesn't reiterate what I'm doing in class or reflect on that particular lesson, its pointless. (And my entrepreneurship teacher LOVES to do that.)

I'm confused here, though. It's not like I sit there looking things up or going through the textbook and that's why I take so long - I pay attention during lecture and take notes so that's not necessary. The entirety of my homework time is pure writing and typing.

You seem to lack drive. That's the issue. If you don't like school, then go do something else you like that you would love to work with even if you didn't get paid.

I hope you don't think that! Why would we be in the profession if we hated kids? It doesn't pay as well as other professions. No kid-hater would subject themselves to 8 hours a day with kids. As a veteran teacher, I can attest to this - I see many rookies who come in thinking it's an easy job with summers off, but leave after 1 year and work at a bank or something.
We push kids to reach their full potentials, hence why we come off as bloodthirsty kid-haters. But we want what is best for the kids.

I don't seriously think that. But there has to be a medium with homework. I'm not saying none at all, but when its done in very large and excessive amounts, it can be a problem, especially when you attend seven classes a day for 50 minutes to an hour.
I'm not lazy by any means. But sometimes, it gets to a point where I'll be lucky to get in bed by 2 AM.
Your college/work experience may be different from mine. Your high school experience may have been different from mine. We're two different people.
Like i said before, homework isn't the problem. Its becomes a major issue when it becalmed overly excessive, and that's when it become detrimental.

But, like, I don't. I do want to succeed, and I do - I've succeeded enough to be accepted into the honors program of a very respected private college starting in the fall, and I don't go out of my way to complain to my teachers or rebel by neglecting my work or anything. I feel as though my drive to succeed is pretty average.

We always have time in the school hours to do your work, whatever you don't finish is homework.
It's not that bad.

Everyone gets lazy at some point. Even me.
The issue is actually what constitutes "excessive work." Some people feel that an hour or 2 is excessive, while others may feel that 5 hours is the limit. I have a problem with the ones that have like one assignment or maybe 3 (worksheets, not essays) and say that they have no free time.

I don't. Sometime if were doing homework in class, depending on the teacher, it results in a zero for that assignment.

Nah, between 2-4 hours is alright for me. 5...I can handle. But there was a day I got home at 3:20 and didn't finish until damm 10:00
That's excessive. I agree with your last statement though.

Then maybe that's the problem. Honestly. Again, you do have a choice. After all, it's your life.
