First, let's not pretend range and power are synonymous. They're not.

Anyways, you and I both know Mariah loves nothing more than to flaunt whistle notes; whereas, Kelly has performed only one EVER, so I don't think it's fair to compare their ranges like that. Nixing the whistle notes, their ranges are, more or less, equal.

Kelly can hit whistle notes too and do all that jazz. Kelly has said in interviews she doesn't hit all those high octave notes often because she doesn't want to show off and be compared to Mariah. She only did it on Idol because it was a competition and she wanted votes.

Kelly also took a huge risk with releasing My December. There wasn't one radio friendly song on that album.

Why is Christina being brought up? How about we get a good live performance from her, then we compare her to Kelly. Yes, she has done "Fighter", "Candyman", "Impossible", etc, but her voice is not good live, while Kelly sounds the same as her records. Facts are facts.

It does take technique to be as versatile as Christina is, particularly in the way she is versatile. When she sings in different genres, her singing itself changes. This might sound axiomatic, but it is indeed different from singers like Kelly Clarkson, who is actually a very versatile singer in a different way; she just happens to be one of those very lucky singers (Elvis is another good example) whose voices tend to suit a large number of genres without making extreme (though there's obviously some) technical changes to their singing style when shifting to a different genre. Personally I think it is a gift that very few singers have.

I must say, though, the Mariah tea is a little watery today. All we've been served is two not-exactly-what-we-wanted performances and the erroneous claim that power equals vocal "better"-ness.
