I know it may sound crazy but the anti-American sentiment is pretty strong here.

That sounds entirely plausible even if it's difficult to understand why any individual or nation would be
seriously offended by their continent's name becoming associated with a particular country. On the other hand, i understand the minor level of frustration involved, since Americans have hijacked the term and redefined it in the eyes of most, considering it's more associateed with the U.S far more than any geographical region...
I guess it's as if a new nation came about in Europe and named itself the United States of Europe, and in turn hijacked the term European for their own nation. I could definately seeing that being frustrated to other Europeans since they identified with the name as well.
