I think Taylor and Adele having huge eras over the last years made it harder for a new pop girl to dominate as the it girl. Meghan sorta did it when AATB overshadowed SIO but Taylor managed to re-establish dominance with Blank Space. At this point though, Meghan's the closest that we have. Ariana and Selena, while having strong eras with consistent Top 10 hits, do not in any way compare to Katy and Gaga's astonishing debuts with IKAG/HNC and JD/PF.
TBT while we're at it:
Both from riding a train in paris to:
300m records sold combined.
900m combined tour gross
12 #1s combined
Both have topped Forbes
Both performed at the Super Bowl ()
Taylor Swift and Adele became household names after Katy and Gaga debuted, though they technically debuted before and at the same time as them respectively.
There will be big pop girls. Trends always come and go, and it seems like right now the GP isn't looking for pop girls, but they will in the future. It seems big pop stars debut in sets at around the same time, so maybe in 5 years we'll get some more
Britney and Gaga aren't even from the same generation. Britney is a LEGEND in Pop music with over 18 yrs in she's past the KP, TS & Gagas
? You guys try to maintain that Britney is still a main girl tho. If the only thing she has over them is time in the industry, why even compare? Britney was only BIIIIG for the same amount of time Gaga was. After her image got oversaturated in the media from her own name and those who copied/were modeled after her (much like Gaga) things were just never the same. To try to count Gaga out when she's been outselling Britney by AT LEAST 3X since her debut (in the 2000s!) Is really just a self-drag, considering Britney hasn't been the Britney you seem to be talking about since ITZ. Right now, Gaga's industry respect is rising, her voice is getting better, and she's just all around in an amazing place. Let me NOT remind you where your fave was 8 years into her career.
Kesha came so close I hope she regains her space..
Ariana or Meghan may have more or bigger hits, I don't know, but they doesn't even come close to Kesha's stardom in her peak.. Ari and Meg still have this teen thing on them and its going to be hard to take that away..
I dont see any of those 3 getting close or even 1/3 of what Gaga & Katy has achieved
That's not how it works, though. If you had to achieve what the previous pop girls did, then Rihanna, Katy, Gaga, etc. wouldn't be popgirls because their careers are less than half the size of Britney's., whereas Britney's career is less than half the size of Madonna's.
Ariana and Meghan are already major popgirls (Meghan has moved 15M (?) singles in the U.S. and like 1.4M albums and over 2.5B streams WW and Ariana has moved over 20M singles in the U.S. and some 1.2M albums and over 4B streams WW) and will continue to expand.
Why is it that the new pop girls don't seem to have the same spark as the pop girls of the past?

This! Even though we had crazy consumes and wigs for a few years there, Katy and Gaga felt so much more.... authentic, as pop stars.

Yes. The new girls are so painfully boring, wtf. Ariana looks scared 24/7, hasn't done anything interesting or original since her debut. Meghan is OK, I'm just not into it. Demi and Selena... the way their fans fight about who sold 300k vs 320k WW

The pop girls... well, honestly the popstars in general that debuted this decade have been lacking in all departments (music, image, overall appeal) and I don't really see any of them sticking around.... the only one that MIGHT be able to cement herself is Meghan Trainor
Cackling. The older pop stans said the same things about Katy and Gaga
when they came out

Britney's first album to move as few/fewer album equivalents as ARTPOP was Britney Jean (unless you count The Singles Collection).
Then again, that member is now more of a Kim Kardashian stan so don't think that their opinion reflects the entirety of the Army's.
@Eternum not really about Gaga. By the time BR came out, Gaga was the biggest pop Icon since Britney, they said it about Katy, but then she proved them wrong by 2011.
Selena, Ariana etc. have already been around for a very long time and they are indeed lacking.
And Britney might have been better 5 years into her career than Gaga 5yrs into hers, but Gaga is better 8 years into her career than Britney 8 years into hers and that's what's important now.

I get what you're saying and of course the music industry is dying at the moment.
But, at this point in Gaga and Katy's careers (3 years in?)
Both already had:
Gaga was in the middle of Born This Way era
Had massive hit and massive impact already
She over the news
About to start her Born This Way Ball Tour after her 200m grossing Monster Ball Tour
Topped Forbes
Katy was in the middle of Teenage Dream era
I dont know much about her receipts but that's enough
Teenage Dream era
Where are Ari & Meghan 3 years into their careers?
Yes lol I was just thinking about this yesterday. As someone else said Adele and Taylor are more recent "pop stars" but they fill such different niches.
But also, Taylor technically came first anyway, and hit stunning success before either of these women with Fearless.
I dont get how everyone is saying that Meghan is gonna be a major pop girl??
Her debut album went platinum, she had multiple hits in most major markets, her new single is having insane radio updates while it sits at #1 on iTunes, she has a video with 1 Billion views, etc.

All true, but all still in progress. She could be another Kesha in terms of success (not that there's much wrong with that).
