People like Kendrick, J. Cole, Jidenna, DAngelo, Janelle Monae are making waves with political music in the alt. R&B and hip hop world, so she decides she wants to jump on the bandwagon too. This is how I see it

"Occasional disaster relief"
*donates consistently for 7 going on 9 years now to the same cause of housing poor black people*
As far as feminism, if you follow her journey, through her relationship with her mother and sisterhood with the DC girls, you can see the natural evolution of her strong "feminist" ideals.
Like ditching her dad after IASF
Not marrying Jay-Z for 7 years of their relationship
Or him taking on part of her last name
Her not wanting to claim "feminism" is more about her misconception of what it meant. The same misconceptions that she's then since, through her realization of the term, been trying to clarify for others to easily follow.

I’ve always considered myself a feminist, although I was always afraid of that word because people put so much on it. When honestly, it’s very simple. It’s just a person that believes in equality for men and women. Men and women balance each other out, and we have to get to a point where we are comfortable with appreciating each other.”

The same misconceptions, in fact that are THROWN at her! "Oh! Mrs. Carter! Traditionalist! No clothes! Too sexy!"
