For an artist who isn't nominated, the Grammy Awards should be a platform to promote their current single. The album proves itself and its own quality, and a million people already downloaded it last week.
A number one single would do more for her right now when people are expressing doubts more about her commercial staying power than about her artistry.

The only "people expressing doubts" are internet stans who are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. In the long run, people watching at home aren't going to be checking the charts thinking "oh, Rihanna isn't commercially successful so I'm not going to buy her album." She's already gaining a lot of momentum regarding her artistry from the album release. The best thing to do would be to maintain and solidify that with a great performance.

Also! There's already so many ballad about to be performed, and also by better vocalist than her. She might as well stand-out with something uptempo.

There were many ballads performed when she did Stay in 2013 but that didn't stop her from being rated one of the best performances of the night by pretty much every news outlet that reviewed the show. The only way an uptempo performance would really stand out (in a good way) is if she serves us the level of choreography no one expects from her.
By the way, I'm fully for promoting Work, but I think an SNL performance and the video could do better and send Work straight to the top.
