I heard "American Oxygen" at my favourite burger restuarant yesterday (Romers if anyone is in Vancouver, try the one with the truffle mushrooms!). Even through the sounds of glasses clinking, laughter and straight people flirting, I could hear the "you can be anyting at all in Americuhh, Americuuh" and cringed every time.

But GOOD pop pushes things forward, introduces new elements wrapped in an impossible-to-replicate (though many will try) package of catchiness and supreme enjoyability. Only "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" come close to doing this on 1989. Nothing on Hard Candy really does it.

Shake it off isn't new or pushing things forward. neither is blank space. Although I love taylor let's be real.

But it is catchy and enjoyable.

The vast majority of Bey's success comes from her brand and public image / persona.

I mean, I like her music too, but I can't name a single one of my friends who would deny a chance to be Beyonce. That money? That glamour? That social status? I can live with a fugly husband for all that.
