A single's purpose is that when someone hears it on the radio, they go like, "OMG that's so good, lemme go check out the rest of their music!!1111!!". A single is supposed to convince the listener than an artist's music is worth listening to. If the single sells a lot, but the album doesn't, that indicates that the single was good enough for people to want to keep it permanently (aka buy it), but not good enough for them to care to check out the rest of the artist's music.

No bb, I didn't even think of my fave because she sells just fine.
Singles are everything now, they make you or break you unless you're an established artist who has a lot of credibility and a huge fanbase like Beyonce and Taylor.
Singles convince people to go to your tours, people want to hear the hit singles not the album tracks, only fans want that.
It's different now, no one buys albums anymore, the huge decline proves it and people now are just slowly switching to streaming.
