The sequencing of the album is also my favourite of any Mariah album. It is so well thought-out and I understand why it is the way it is. It's clear she had a "vision".
I agree. Its really cohesive.
The way the album opens with "Cry." >>>>>>>>>>>
When One More Try leads into Heavenly
I was introduced to Mariah in 2002/3 when I heard "I Know What You Want" or "Always Be My Baby". So those songs are very special to me. I can't remember which one it was but it was either one, or both really that really made me feel some kind of way. I listened to a few more of her songs and bought her "Greatest Hits" album but never went beyond that until around 2009 which was the "Memoirs" era which is when I became more intrigued, so that was the first MC album I listened to. I fell in love and didn't stop playing it for... who knows how long. After that I discovered the rest of her discography. I think it was seeing the "Honey" video and hearing "The Roof" that probably solidified me being a stan. One night I was just listening to random MC songs and "The Roof" came on. I was BLOWN AWAY. It took me on a trip that I didn't want to end. And it hasn't ended since.
Th album still doesn't impress me that much but I'll admit, I play it throughout and get slayed despite skipping the bonus tracks and occasionally Money, One More Try and Heavenly.
Somedays I think this is better than Butterfly. There, I've said it.
Mariah at her most raw, unvarnished, unhurried, vulnerable. Arguably pop's first pre-divorce album? Lyrically, I don't think she's ever been more exposed. Just a remarkable work.
