Katy hated Birthday being released when it was. She knew that song could've been huge.
What does she do? Release the most ridiculous excuse for a "music video" and does a taped performance one time.

I'm surprised P4K rated The Pinkprint higher than J. Cole's album. It's weird that the reason they downed 2014 FHD for (too ambitious) is the same thing they praised TPP for.
Katy herself said LL was going to be released this year.
And WOA was well received(like DH) and it wasn't a normal single for her. Katy freaking loves that song and she wanted it to be her "gay anthem"
if you will. The whole eras purpose was to make smashes(no one expected TD again though) but at different approaches and influences from each single.
Unconditionally - Ballad/ serious approach
Walking on Air - Dance pop
Dark Horse - trap-influenced
Roar - classic Katy, instant anthemic smash
Legendary Lovers - the India/spicy vibe
But it's all speculation at this point, all we do know is Katy has to approve every release and this era did not play out the way she thought it would.
ok so it's your research, I like it
thought you would reference that annoying guy who said Birthday video is sexy and thinks Dr Luke is sending him emails

she thought it was a guaranteed smash as did everyone so she tried as little as possible

She put a lot of effort into that video and probably had to do like 6 hours of makeup a day to become all those characters.
Must be the ageism, people don't like old people singing about sex
Birthday was always a huge flop with zero potential. Way too cheesy and not in a good way. Cringeworthy, stupid, and annoying. TIHWD in its place would've been so huge. Those 200 million views despite zero promo, zero airplay and zero hype don't lie.
“I want the fans to be surprised,” Gaga said. “But I will just tell you that it’s a wonderful, soul-searching experience. And it’s very unlike the last album in that way. I made that album on the road. ARTPOP was, you know, the acid-making record. And this record is like—my old self as a cadaver. And I’m just, I’m operating on my old self.”
