btw era was a mess. the first single era was on key + cohesive, and the facial prosthetics were a great idea. but then judas performances + teog era when she insisted on that blonde/black wig with the big ass mole rat on her face did not help things

if teog had been second single and she consistently slayed with this type of look throughout

Can we get over DJ Snake? From the interviews he's done (and Gaga's lack of mentioning him) I don't think he was involved much at all in the creative process.

And you can see what happens when he works alone on Turn Down For What. No thanks, Gaga. Keep him working with DJWS.

When she started playing Poker Face acoustic at Roseland I thought for sure it was Captivated PF Acoustic is basically Captivated, which is really interesting to me, considering she initially wrote PF at the piano.

Then the edge of glory video mess that prevented it from hitting number 1. The recycled video concept of edge of glory in You and I. Then Marry the night video being so long and messy and no one bothered to watch it. MTN being the last single when there was songs like Hair, Scheiße and Heavy metal lover waiting to smash. It was very much a mess.

You and I was what Gaga wanted it to be, that was always gonna be the that way. MTN was the fifth single and was her chance to just do whatever, she already had the biggest smash of the year after Adele's phenomenon. Judas gave a flawless video and got solid promotion with some of her absolute best looks (long black and white hair + Graham Norton, Cannes Film Festival, Paul O'Grady). Edge of Glory's video was a mess granted, but she performed it solidly on American Idol's finale (I was there hihihi), MuchMusicNow, Paul O'Grady and in Japan and Germany. Her performances of Hair were spectacular every single time. Her You and I performances slayed to the heavens when they came around barring the VMAs which granted was a mess. There was so much more good than bad, I'd never consider BTW a mess.

And let's be real, HML would never have smashed. Radio would not have taken to it. I'd like to think Scheiße would have, but 2011 was the shift away from dance/EDM so in all likelihood it probably wouldn't have either.

Blonde/Black was the face of the album launch though which was cohesive, it was a constant which she smartly interchanged with teal without a quick change all at once to another total image, which she did about 15 times during the Applause era alone. That look you posted slays for a magazine and maybe a single performance or interview, but washes her out. Judas' performance that weren't on SNL or Ellen slayed generally, and all her TEOG performances slayed. Yeah, it should have been the second single but at least she switched it in time to get it Top 5 with some longevity.

This doesn't really lend to the fact that she was in the do-no-wrong era pre-BTW. The only reason it felt more cohesive is because she was touring and dropped anything and the world went insane for it. Her imagery through 2010 took a big shift in Telephone, then another massive one with Alejandro. She did gray hair to the VMAs (which slayed) but wasn't part of any established image. I really feel BTW, apart for the Judas-to-EOG-with-a-rushed-MV era as a whole was pretty great. Her performance alone during that summer were some of her absolute best.
