It's so much faster and convenient. You can't even leave group chats in iMessage on iOS7 and it had to be implemented a year later. The fact that it was showed off at the iOS 8 event as a brand new feature

Snapchat is good cuz it's in real time + direct from the camera so people can't fake their location and/or post photos WEEKS later pretending to have fun like on Instagram.
