Avril is actually dead and was replaced after Let Go by the new "Avril" because she couldn't handle the spotlight and success she once had.
She was replaced during the Under My Skin era suggesting the dark-themed CD is a homage to the previous Avril.
Proofs:
Nobody's Home is actually about the old Avril and how she was feeling lost
Her feelings she hides
Her dreams she can't find
She's losing her mind
She's fallen behind
She can't find her place
She's losing her faith
She's fallen from grace
She's all over the place.
Also,
My Happy Ending references how she commited suicided:
In a city so dead
Held up so high
On such a breakable thread
On
Together, the "new" Avril feels uncomfortable with the way things are being handled so she confesses her actions:
I cannot find a way to describe it
It's there inside
All I do is hide
I wish that it would just go away
All the pain
I thought I knew
All my thoughts lead back to you
Back to what
Was never said
Back and forth
Inside my head
Lastly, she wrote the heartfelt ballad
Slipped Away in full regret.
I've had my wake up
Won't you wake up
I keep asking why
And I can't take it
It wasn't a fake it
It happened you passed by
(...)
Now you're gone
Now you're gone
There you go
There you go
Somewhere you're not coming back
Also, Evan, her former band member and best friend, recently wrote and recorded a song about the old Avril, called
The Best Years of Our Lives:
It's been so quiet since you're gone,
And everyday feels more like a year,
Sometimes I wish I could move on,
The memories would all just disappear
(...)
I'd never thought this could ever end,
I'd never thought I'd lose my bestfriend,
Everything is different now
#RIP Avril
