Well not necessarily hope, but it confines the human experience to something more palatable. Other animals are driven by instinctual drive. They don't have to think about why they're here. They just do.
Humans don't come into the world with this same kind of primal drive. It's a lot more...open. There's only a human experience because we create it. And for some people (or most) it gives them more security to define the experience with clear parameters (using religion, cultural norms, etc.).
I think we have the mental capacity to create a less toxic human experience not centered on things like religion. In time we'll reach that point. It's the natural progression of the world (free slaves, women right, jews get a state after holocaust, gay right, etc.).
