In 2012, when the first single off of her new album was called Triumphant (Get’ Em). The song failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100, and was soon forgotten. So the album was delayed to “sometime in 2013”.

In early 2013, Carey released the song Almost Home, which was the main song in Oz the Great and Powerful. “Almost Home” was supposed to be included in Carey’s new album and be its (new) first single if it had succeeded in the charts. But just like Triumphant, the song failed to enter Billboard Top 100. So they forgot it ever existed, hoping the public would too.

Then Marian Carey decided to enlist the services of Miguel, and the two released the song Beautiful. The song (which sounds more like a Miguel song featuring Mariah) had an initial positive response, and it finally put Mariah Carey back on the charts. However, it failed to reach the top 10 after all those past attempts...

So tell me again how "beautiful" was a hit please?

Neither women will ever get a #1 hit on Billboard again but it's hard to argue that either IS NOT still impacting todays talent. That is relevance. They're not popular artists still driving hits but their impact still very much exists.

Along with Whitney and Celine, Mariah is considered one of the premiere vocalists of the past several decades. She is one of the most successful female artists of all time. She is one of the main standards when people think of vocalists.

Madonna is arguably the most successful female artist of all time. Her success is worldwide in a way few have been able to emulate. The longevity she had as a successful #1 hit artist... Her influence is all over the place in young(er) artist work. Many of todays young artist see the drive, the creativity, the fearlessness, the career she has to this day as the ultimate. The thing to match. The thing to compete with. She's one of the main standards in being a legend.

Let me also clarify some of these facts of yours.

Mariah did not intend for Almost Home to be a new lead single, nor was it even the main song in Oz, The Great and Powerful, hence why it was included at the very end of the credits. She did not perform it live, and she did not promote it much, even when doing TV appearances (cuz she was apparently getting coverage for her lucrative reality TV show stint...so yes...she does get talked about)

Top 40 classifies as a hit. #Beautiful exceeded those expectations by reaching #15 WITHOUT radio support. Top 10 would just be an added bonus so YES. It was a hit.

Mariah pushed back the album because of her success with #Beautiful and wanted to perfect the album so she was sure it was ready. And no the specific release date was not covered yet but it made many lists for the most anticipated albums of 2014. Imagine that? MORE COVERAGE.

Mariah did ONE weight loss commercial for post-partum weight loss. It's not she needed it to be relevant when the month of December does that for her with no effort whatsoever.

She did one season of American Idol and yes it was a nice way to get her more relevance. And American Idol may be reality tv but it was about singing aka free promo. Smart one.

The point is Emancipation was like her Ray of Light.
But she needs to have her Confessions era now.

Remember, after American Life flopped everyone was questioning Madonna's relevance too.
She had to prove that she could comeback a second time with Confessions and that Ray Of Light wasn't a fluke.
