United States has pretty awesome literature but so many of it has European influences. Europe is still highly popular and regarded. Harry Potter swept the world in the past decade. One of the greatest books this generation - Atonement - came from Europe.

when it comes to classics then the UK wins hands down, it's no contest, but when it comes to modern literature i'd say it's fairly more even.. I'd still say the UK though.

J. R. R. Tolkien is the greatest author of all time in my opinion. No-one before him actually took the time to create a legendarium as he did. No-one created and designed worlds, and went as far as writing its entire history, then writing the greatest fantasy epic of all time in what can only be described as true literary class.
