Well the UK has had a long time to sit around writing books and there is some fantastic american literature

Both countries have great classics, but UK slays modern times.
Although US has good sis George R.R. Martin, but still he wouldn't exist without the Lord and Saviour J.R.R. Tolkien who was writing on british grounds
