I don't think it's fair to compare the artists of today to artists from before.
It's really hard for a massive star (who debuted IN the digital era) to become completely irrelevant with the advent of the digital era, in comparison to the 40s-2007.
Like even if an album underperforms or a single flops, there will always be a chance for them to come back.
